If you complete your CBT at the age of 16, you can upgrade to a limited 50cc bike by 17. At 19 you can upgrade to an A1 licence which allows you to ride a 125cc bike without L plates and carry the passenger.

The A2 is the next step. You can upgrade from an A1 or take a direct-access theory or practical test.

A1 Licence

The open road, the breeze in your hair and the excitement that comes from riding on a motorcycle. There's nothing quite like it, but before you can experience the freedom that comes with it, there's a vital first step to take getting your A1 licence.

The A1 license is the first rung on the bike licensing ladder, and allows you to ride mopeds and motorcycles up to 125cc, with the power output of up to 11kW. It is available at 17 years old and is a great option for those who want to begin their motorbike journey in a more accessible way.

To gain an A1 license, you'll need to complete the Compulsory Basic Training (CBT), and pass both a theory and two-part practical test. The CBT course is essential for motorcycle training, and helps prepare for the theory and practical tests. The official website of the Government allows you to schedule your theory test, and then change or cancel your appointment.

You will need a motorcycle instructor to accompany you on your A1 test. The test should take about 20 minutes and will include the modules 1 and 2. Module 1 is conducted at the training center and will focus on off road maneuvers, such as controlled stop, a slalom and a figure eight. The remaining portion of the test is conducted on the roads, and will focus on your ability to manage a motorbike in a fast speed.

Module 2 will be based on riding a motorcycle through traffic and navigating junctions. You will be assessed on your ability to read road signs, and understand and follow road laws. You will also be required to demonstrate your ability to ride at a slow speed, and slow control exercises such as turning left, going up and down hills, and a U-turn.

Once you have successfully completed your A1 licence, you'll be capable of upgrading to the A2 license by passing your CBT as well as Theory and Practical Tests. You can then operate any A2 category bike, and can carry passengers.

A2 Licence

The A2 Licence is the second step in the process of getting a full motorcycle licence. The A2 licence is restricted and is only available by those who are 19 or over with an active CBT. The A2 licence allows you to ride motorcycles that have a maximum power of 47 BHP. However, motorcycles with more power can only be restricted to 94 BHP.

If you decide to go the A2 option to take, then you must pass Module 1 and Module 2 in your motorcycle test. Both tests can be booked at the same place that you book your CBT course or theory test. The A2 route suits riders who have completed their CBT course in a short time and are ready, both financially and in terms of experience, to upgrade to a larger bike.

Module 1 of the A2 motorcycle test is an indoor session in which you'll learn how to control your bike, including emergency stops and slow speed maneuvering. You will then take the road section of the test, in which you'll need to demonstrate hazard-avoidance exercises as well as road positioning. You will also have to perform lifesaver checks and keep two seconds of distance from the vehicle ahead of you. There are minor mistakes that you can make that can lead to 10 faults. This includes not using your mirrors and failing to maintain the proper distance.

If you pass both the modules of your A2 motorcycle test, you'll be able to ride any motorbike that falls into the A2 category. This includes the renowned Honda CB500F or Yamaha MT-07 model. While these bikes are not especially powerful, they are more than capable of navigating the speed limits and offer the ride that is comfortable and enjoyable.

A3 Licence

The A2 Licence is a natural advancement from the CBT and lets riders advance to larger bikes that have more power. It also offers extra perks that aren't available with the CBT for example, riding on motorways and carrying passengers. You can upgrade from CBT to the A2 licence through additional training and passing the relevant exam. The A2 licence is valid for two years and may be upgraded to a full, unlimited A licence after another two years.

The first step to getting your A2 license is to be able to pass the Compulsory Base Training (CBT) test and the Motorcycle Theory Test. After you have completed these requirements, you are able to take the Module 1 and Module 2 practical tests. The module 1 test tests your ability to ride safely in a closed-circuit, while the module 2 test involves manoeuvres on an open road.

You must be able show good observation skills during the A2 practical exam and be able to anticipate road hazards. You must also be able to use the correct road position and execute controlled manoeuvres. You should be able, for instance, to make a U turn or figure eight. You should also be able to control the bike in slow-speed conditions, such as when turning at junctions or responding to traffic signals.

Once you have passed your A2 test, you can start working towards the full A licence. This can be achieved through the progressive access route or taking a direct entry exam. You must pass both mod 1 and 2 practical tests as well as the theoretical test to be eligible for direct entry.

The A1 and A2 licenses differ from the other UK motorbike licences because they are restricted on power-to-weight ratios rather than engine cc. This means that even 600cc bikes are A2 conforming, particularly those with restrictor kits installed. It is important to remember that not all bikes claiming to be A2 conforming are actually A2 compliant. Do some research before buying one.

A4 Licence

The A4 Licence allows drivers to drive vehicles with four wheels or more. This license includes buses, trucks, and coaches. It also covers vehicles that transport dangerous goods. To be able to obtain a license, drivers must pass an investigation into their criminal background. To obtain an A1-A4 licence the driver must go through training at a local transportation office or a driving school that is approved. They must also pass a physical test.
